Welcome to the Minster
The Minster Church of St Mary and St James Great Grimsby is a busy and vibrant resource for the people of North East Lincolnshire seven days a week. This architectural and heritage gem in the heart of the town centre has served the local community for more than 900 years.
Summing up its importance to the town the Lord Bishop of Lincoln, Bishop Edward King, said at a meeting of the Grimsby Church Extension Society at the Town Hall on 22 April 1907
“… one of the grandest amongst all the grand churches in our Diocese. There it stands in that grim old immovable way, right in the eye of the north-east wind, steady and firm and strong. Year after year, there it is, whatever comes, and I do rejoice in being there yesterday. And there is not only the strength of that building but there is a beauty about it which I think is the true beauty which ought to belong to churches; it is the beauty of holiness. There is in this church of yours here a certain mystery which comes from the excellence of proportion as well as strength, and which leads one’s thought to something higher than what you can visibly see. When you get these two it seems to secure the true purpose of art which is not to give us satisfaction but inspiration…..”
